There's been a popular theory for years now that the red line was man made, used to separate the world so the government could better control it. I guess to an extent that was correct. "The Alliance" which eventually became the WG, somehow got control of one or more of the Ancient Weapons and used them to wipe out the civilization that created them. I'm the process they sank a massive continent and divided the world into four separate seas blocked by almost impassable barriers.
