Methanol readily absorbs through the skin though. It causes blindness. The fact that companies used it to make hand sanitizer is hilarious to me - people are stupid.

Unrelated, wanted to poll the group. Was eating lunch with Ms Thickums at work yesterday and stumbled upon something. Maybe I was being weird...but I don't think so. We were talking about our daughters and I showed her a picture where mine had 2 pigtails...but pulled one out. She looked crazy with 1 pigtail and an afro. She said her daughter does the same. Showed a picture of her daughter with her mop top of curls. I told her "she looks like you in that picture" (she really doesn't at all, but I [obviously] hurt her feelings earlier when I said they do not look alike before -her body language kinda deflated.) She joked "Yes, she is beautiful....igual que su mama [just like her mother]!!"

I kinda froze. Just thinking of agreeing gave me anxiety. There was a noticeable silence and pause before I said "Yes, your daughter is very pretty."...she said, "Yep, she's beautiful".
(She wasn't fishing for the compliment for her...she wanted the compliment for her daughter).

Another pause. I stopped and explained to her that American society/culture made it awkward to agree. I could say her daughter is pretty or cute -- but saying beautiful is reserved for when she's much, much older (her daughter is 3). But I could say that my daughter is beautiful...just not someone else's. If someone (particularly a guy) said a little girl was beautiful, there'd be strange looks. Little girls are "pretty"...and if you want to put some emphasis, "very pretty".

She told me that in Puerto Rico -- no one cares.

I tried to think of any time I've ever heard someone say that a little girl was beautiful, gorgeous, stunning, etc...Came up 0.

Am I being weird?

I don't spend a lot of time around little kids, but I've definitely heard beautiful before. Gorgeous I feel is a bit situation dependent, and I'll 2nd Mongor's notion that sexy is right out. I feel like I more commonly hear gorgeous in the context of an object - "that looks gorgeous on you" or "you look gorgeous in that."

If it helps you can skirt the issue by saying something like "she's very pretty, beautiful brown eyes" or something like that, but I don't think people generally associate with "beautiful little kid" with pedophile unless you're being a super creep about it.

Do the creep...

Maybe it is just me, but....this is an opportunity. You just had an exchange of cultural ideas without either party taking offense ( assuming male and female here as well ). This has a few topics in it that can be had for discussion for friend building / exchanging of ideas with minimal ( I R OFFENDED ). I don't blame you for being on the defensive.

Son caught some fungal infection in the scalp and the lady is going crazy. We went to a dermatologist to and got some medication. Will start giving to him soon.

-lol

My daughter had rosoleum a week or two ago. Babies are wild. Looked like she had leprosy for a day or two. Started on her chest, spread over her ENTIRE body, then just disappeared then she went back to her cute self.

**Edit**
So apparently Herman Cain has died....from 'Rona....but it feels like a blackout.

It's a pretty big issue. I can't find the original article I wanted to give you, but essentially deepfake recognition technology is pretty awful even though deepfakes aren't particularly compelling at the moment. There are audio deepfakes too: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRt-fq ... DnFJnpPS2Q

I think it's going to take new filetypes that have some sort of metadata or other information/protection built into files that allow people to easily see that they're modified in order to actually solve the issue, but that's just me.

I'm like that with OP. Took a OP break because the story is dragging. Figure I'll pick it back up in September

I never realized how many I read just because they were right there on Mangastream until Mangastream went down. Once I had to actually look for manga for a few weeks I pretty much stopped reading all but a few (Ippo and Boku no Hero). Every now and then I'll see a post that reminds me to catch up with something though.

Yep. In college, I was the same way, except with Onemanga. The crackdown on them really stopped me from reading new series and was relegated to the big 3. The end of the big 3 really stopped my manga reading days...even though technically, I read them out of duty and not desire. Berserk is the only manga that I can say I read religiously (..every 3 years when there is a new chapter.).

Hurricane Isaias is here and directly on top of me right now. Really not that bad -- we've had worst pop up thunderstorms. Hope anyone impacted made out alright.

I had to learn valuation at one point for my degree, but I really don't remember anywhere close to enough to give a fully-educated/detailed response.

My general guess is that we're in a bubble:
  • Market is attempting a recovery, but there's nothing really there to support it. I don't think we can assume it's correcting the drop, since the pandemic is worse (in the US) since March, so any correction would likely have already happened.
  • Because the pandemic is getting worse, I imagine some states will start shuttering again. Hospitals are full, especially in rural areas.
  • Revenues are propped up by government programs, so when those go away (like they're starting to) I expect sales to drop again. Current research indicates that the programs (extended unemployment, extra cash in unemployment) have been beneficial overall, thus my expectation of a decline.
  • We'll probably see a market boost whenever this next round of stimulus happens, but it'll be just as temporary. You'd effectively be banking on consumption moving up to meet the market gains, and I'm the "invest in undervalued things" type as opposed to the "try to find the next big thing before it happens." If I was going to do that I'd just be a venture capitalist.
  • We were already over-valued, as our stimulus from 2008 has been maintained and extended after we've recovered. Now we're borrowing huge cash again to inject into the economy, we're still artificially propping it up.
  • Previous issues like student debt and credit swaps still aren't addressed.
We're far and away the largest economy, so people/countries are still going to be gunning for our business and purchasing out debt... I just have no idea at what point that grows too massive and implodes. We're borrowing another 2-3 trillion dollars. Are banks giving us monopoly money and hoping we don't notice?
