Technically XX is correct about the draft being involuntary. Though the only ones that can't be drafted for now are females and those who have aged out of selective service. Most people on here have already went past the age limit though.

I mean... we all know it was a shit political stunt from start to finish. Dems didn't even half-ass it and the minute traction it had in the Senate was only because of outside factors. Mitt Romney has some balls though, even knowing it wasn't going anywhere he still put his neck out. If the market actually reacted to a foregone conclusion like that... well, that's just terrifying.

JFC if I didn't hate everything about our politicians I'd probably try to be one. Don't know why I like talking politics so much (especially to you guys), guess I just respect your opinions and they're different from mine.

----NON-POLITICS----

So... how about that anime? I forgot to look into this before, but... redditor did a "Naruto Kai." Boiled the whole anime down to 72 episodes, including pre-skip and Shippuden. Apparently I'm only a year late, apologies if someone mentioned this before.

I still haven't finished watching those 2, but I did manage to finish reading Naruto at least.

It definitely was the renaissance of anime. I don't see My Hero Academia or things like Kimetsu no Yaiba being as core to the growth of anime/manga as the big 3.

Neither do I, those series were massive, especially when anime started to make it to the mainstream in the US. Before those, they had the much more mature series such as Bebop. All of a sudden a generation of kids could watch those series.

I don't see any series right now coming close to those and I'm surprised OP hasn't been made into a widespread anime in the US

The kids had other things before the big 3 like Dragonball and Pokemon. Both of which made it more into mainstream US than the big 3 ever did. Probably the biggest push to happen for anime would have to be Cartoon Network coming out with Toonami. Which ironically came around when US cartoons started to drop off.

Come to think about it, I doubt there will ever be another time when cartoons are so good or prevalent. Or at least anytime soon.

I'm not finding good data on viewership for animated series, but I feel like SpongeBob was stupid popular. I can imagine another one of those coming around.

I think he's talking about the slow death of Saturday morning cartoons. The two probably overlap -- though I don't think they are related

....I think the biggest thing is just that they came out when the technology caught up to make it possible to distribute the content all around the world. I learned how to IRC and Bittorrent because of comics and anime

I meant renaissance as in it changed the formula for anime. I dont remember any other series that did the long, continuing story format vs episodic format. And look how mainstream it became --thanks to Area 51 -- everyone knows what a Naruto run is now...I feel that the Big 3 were popular enough that you could say "I watch anime" and wouldnt immediately be treated like an outsider/nerd/weeaboo.

Yeah, The big 3 were a right place, right time situation. Basically it blew up as anime was becoming mainstream worldwide and happened to coincide with technology making it easy to get episodes from Japan quickly AND fansubbers making it easier than ever for fansubbers to make subtitles and get stuff out there. Fansubs have existed for decades now. My first anime purchases (which are still at my parents house) are a bunch of DBZ fansub VHS tapes. Think about how much work it took to put subs on a VHS and then COPY VHS tapes. It was a pain in the ass, it got easier with the double deck VCRs but before that it was a nightmare of connecting two VCRs.

Naruto started to become a thing when I was a senior in high school because of US Shonen Jump, that's also when One Piece was introduced. By freshman year of college (2003-2004) I actually bought VCDs of the first 50 episodes or so of Naruto off ebay as at the time I didn't know really anything about torrenting or digital fansubs. I got introduced to Bleach first through a college friend who went to Japan and had the first volume of the manga and then through scanlations of the manga.

I remember there was this group that put out really high quality scans of Bleach and they had all the way up to the end of the Soul Society arc and then they caught up with the series and waiting became torture.

This was also around the time that On Demand started and I even remember my cable provider at home had "The Anime Network" which was basically a lot of anime from companies like ADV (now gone)

Nowadays people just take instant access to anime for granted, it's just part of overall entertainment. New stuff just isn't gonna hit like the old stuff did because of timing and the overall culture around anime now.

I also think that in addition to today's anime in general being kinda trash that it's poisoned the well making it really difficult for really good things to rise to the top.

More about animation overall. Back in the 90s anime was starting to catch on in the US, companies were putting out cartoons on weekday mornings and afternoons as well as Saturday mornings. Sunday nights pretty much belonged to the Simpsons as that was when they were at their height. Disney was going through it's animation renaissance and other movie companies weren't afraid to actually challenge Disney with their own animated movies no matter how good or bad they were. Then you had more teen and adult oriented shows coming out like Daria, Beavis and Butthead, Aeon Flux, South Park, Celebrity Deathmatch and more.

so...the in-laws are officially back in their house in Central America. GOOD RIDDANCE! Their last week, they turned it up to 120%.

Yesterday (travel day) -- my wife was at her limit.
#1. They packed 6 suitcases full of stuff (~$300 to send it all). The best part -- my wife/I bought them a complete set of luggages last year....so why were the wheels and zippers busted and/or straps ripped on 5 of 6 suitcases? Because they gave/traded the good ones away and her dad wanted/expected her to buy another set (he apparently had already identified them online and wanted her to order it/pick it up in store etc). She said hell no.

Flying out first thing Saturday morning...so Friday night....
#2 They spilled some juice on the counter top, and it dripped to the floor. They didn't clean at all. Instead they let it air dry overnight. So this sticky fucking mess on the counter tops...down the cabinets....and on the floor. I said, meh -- too late, we will clean it when we get back...nothing is delaying these fucks!

#3.They threw away a box of cereal...but hit 50% of the trash can -- so it was just crumbs on the floor. They did the same thing with a bag of rice. They were moving it and dropped it...so it spilled out. Walking through the kitchen sounded just like walking on fresh snow -- haha!

#4. it REALLY annoyed me...but my wife not so much. They took 3 glass jars of honey...and transferred them into a square tupperware container, then threw the glass jars away. I have no fucking clue why.

#5 was the nail in the coffin for my wife. Before we drove to the airport -- they said let's use the bathroom. So someone (I am certain it was the dad) -- took a massive shit -- but didnt/forgot to flush. Obviously we didn't check the bedroom/bathroom for quite some time. I went in to survey the damage and found it. Called the wife in. She was like...WTGDF? They didn't clean the bathroom or even attempt to clean their living area (my daughter was in daycare all week -- so they had nothing but time). Also, for them to take 6 luggages worth of stuff -- they sure did leave quite a bit behind -- almost as if they expect to come back. Clothes still hanging in the walk-in closet. Clothes still in the dresser drawers. Stuff still in the bathroom cabinets. Toiletries still set out like someone lives there. HELL NO! HELL NO! HELL NOOOOO!!! I'm boxing their shit up next week sometime.

Gave them $1k in cash and put $3k in their acct (on top of the $1k/month we give them)...so they should be able to live like kings for a while...or spoil the rest of the family in C.America.

...they are out of my life for a good while. Annoying as hell, but I will wholeheartedly admit they loved my daughter well and took care of her far better than any daycare ever could. All-in-all. 3/10, would not repeat!

Also...my daughter started daycare last week. She had a melt down the 1st two days. By day 3...she was done with us and waives us off quickly. The best part is that she EXHAUSTS herself there. I pick her up. Bring her home. One of us feeds her..she plays for another 20-30 minutes, and then she is ready for sleep. I think we can fall into a pretty solid routine.

Finally...my inlaws lived with us for 8 months...a new baby last may, guess who has 2 more dependents to claim on his taxes?! The funny part -- the one sister asked my wife if she could claim them because she could really use the money. My wife asked me. My answer? I could really use the money from that AC unit we had installed....

...serious question -- am I being greedy/selfish/immature? My wife told her sister no -- but asked those questions while kinda doubting herself/us.

Was going to say, you were the ones taking care of them, you're the one who paid for the SIL's new AC unit, i'm amazed at the audacity of her to ask if she could take the parents as dependents.

You technically saved her from getting charged for tax fraud, so... they should thank you instead? Even then you've given them tons of valuables, I don't think they can call you greedy.

Also screw your in-laws, that was awful.
