Was anyone surprised that states and/or a handful of individuals appointed by states can't just declare people a criminal and have them removed from the ballot!?

Legally it's actually more interesting than that. The way the amendment is written is that someone who engages in insurrection is automatically disqualified to begin with and only Congress can allow them back. Haven't had time to read the brief as to why it's apparently the opposite now. More interestingly is that from my understanding the SC didn't actually contest the finding that he engaged in insurrection nor that it applies to him.

It was only supposed to be 4 years last time, then he tried to steal the election back and got violent when that failed and he didn't want to leave. That doesn't address all the awful shit he's promised to do in 4 years either.
