I never tried a long-distance thing. Until we moved in together she was living at her parents' place which was over an hour away. She worked in the city though so we still saw each other.killacross wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2023 2:24 pm This is the same girl that you were trying the long distance thing with?

Gotcha, I misunderstood. I thought you had said before that she lived far away and had to take a train to see you every so often. An hr commute is not ideal, but doable.Digital Masta wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2023 12:07 am I never tried a long-distance thing. How does marriage work in Japan? When do you get her family's samurai gear and Hattori Hanzou sword?
hope you don't let marriage pull you away from the boards.

I have to get documents from the US consulate, not for US reasons but because Japan requires them. It's easy for them to confirm the current marriage status and criminal record of Japanese citizens but for us foreigners, they don't know if we're legally married outside of Japan. I have to get a document from my home country saying that I'm not already married and also not a criminal. So the earliest I could get an appointment is January 24th. So that means the marriage will get registered in February.
I also may have to show them my birth certificate so I asked my parents to send it as opposed to spending $60-80 and 20+ days ordering a new one. Honestly, they don't need it anymore since I'm not a child, I should be the one with that document.
My girlfriend has to do things on the Japan side like get the paperwork as well as her family registry. Every Japanese citizen is part of a registry that probably goes back to their great-great-grandparents (max), and when Japanese people get married either the husband or wife is REQUIRED by law to join the other's family register thus taking on their spouse's family name. This means you leave your family of origin's registry and join your spouses. For example, my soon-to-be father-in-law joined my girlfriend's mother's registry and changed his name to hers.
In the case of international marriages, the Japanese person isn't required to do this since they aren't married to a Japanese citizen. We just appear as an asterisk on the family registry so it would be like "Hanako Tanaka *married to Bob Smith". This would also mean that the future kids would have their mother's last name so all the kids would be Tanaka in the above example. So that option is a non-starter for us because she's taking my last name. She will have to make a new family registry that has my last name with her as the head of it and me still as an asterisk.
Lots of info you didn't ask for but that's basically how it works.
I'm sure everything the family has will likely get left to her younger brother as he's the golden child. She has an older sister but she will likely end up a cat lady.
Re: There we go
Yeah I've read that you can't become an official japanese citizen. You'll always be a foreigner even on paper something like that. So that's what the asterisk means. As for given your name up. Good for you that you didn't.
What I find strange is; why did her father give up is last name when marrying his wife. Is he also a foreigner?
Anyway, congratulations man. May you have a blessed, healthy and long marriage together.

Re: There we go
So the family registry has the family members, the asterisk means that next to her name it will show she is married to me but I'm not officially part of the registry. If I were Japanese she would have come off of her registry and entered mine. The new registry she will have to make will include her and our children with me as a footnote as the husband and father of the children.Haohmaru wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2023 11:25 am Yeah I've read that you can't become an official japanese citizen. You can become a Japanese citizen, I wouldn't want to because they don't allow dual citizenship.
Her father changed his name to her mother's because her family runs a furniture-making business and her father (my girlfriend's grandfather) only had two daughters. Her mother is the older of the two and as such was the one to take over the business. Her father has two other brothers and he's either the middle child or the youngest. So because he was marrying into a family with no sons he took her name to carry it on.
It happens fairly often in Japan, in particular, if the wife's family is of a certain status.

Changing ones last name is such a big taboo in most cultures even if it means marrying up.Digital Masta wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2023 11:51 am Her father changed his name to her mother's because her family runs a furniture-making business and her father (my girlfriend's grandfather) only had two daughters. For Japanese men to do so is surprising to me. Especially since they value their honor so much

Well in the West it isn't taboo...it's just not common. Japan has a long history of younger sons being "adopted" into other families that don't have sons. In some more modern cases it can be done because they don't have a good relationship with their family of origin.Haohmaru wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2023 6:54 pmChanging ones last name is such a big taboo in most cultures even if it means marrying up.Digital Masta wrote: ↑Wed Dec 27, 2023 11:51 am Her father changed his name to her mother's because her family runs a furniture-making business and her father (my girlfriend's grandfather) only had two daughters. Re: There we go
That last line is what happens here
I know at least 4 guys who took their wife's last names to "make their bloodline/family name die off"
And I know one couple who put their names in a generator and blended them.. It was Smith and Mitchelson became Mitteness
They were free love type hippies though and were divorced in under 2 years. They both couldn't/wouldn't stop fucking people that weren't them...
**Edit**
Well.. Bye bye porn hub
Apparently NC passed some type of age verification law... I had no clue. Just randomly decided to check the local news website. They said it gets blocked Jan 1st...but PH is getting ahead of the curve
Oh well I guess. I'll never see porn again

Re: There we go
My friend that I've known my entire life, when he got married in Japan, he changed his last name to hers. My first reaction was, what kind of bitch move is this, naturally. I quickly realized it was a cultural thing, plus it's not a bad thing to do away with his 'slave' name.
