I have to get documents from the US consulate, not for US reasons but because Japan requires them. It's easy for them to confirm the current marriage status and criminal record of Japanese citizens but for us foreigners, they don't know if we're legally married outside of Japan. I have to get a document from my home country saying that I'm not already married and also not a criminal. So the earliest I could get an appointment is January 24th. So that means the marriage will get registered in February.

I also may have to show them my birth certificate so I asked my parents to send it as opposed to spending $60-80 and 20+ days ordering a new one. Honestly, they don't need it anymore since I'm not a child, I should be the one with that document.

My girlfriend has to do things on the Japan side like get the paperwork as well as her family registry. Every Japanese citizen is part of a registry that probably goes back to their great-great-grandparents (max), and when Japanese people get married either the husband or wife is REQUIRED by law to join the other's family register thus taking on their spouse's family name. This means you leave your family of origin's registry and join your spouses. For example, my soon-to-be father-in-law joined my girlfriend's mother's registry and changed his name to hers.

In the case of international marriages, the Japanese person isn't required to do this since they aren't married to a Japanese citizen. We just appear as an asterisk on the family registry so it would be like "Hanako Tanaka *married to Bob Smith". This would also mean that the future kids would have their mother's last name so all the kids would be Tanaka in the above example. So that option is a non-starter for us because she's taking my last name. She will have to make a new family registry that has my last name with her as the head of it and me still as an asterisk.

Lots of info you didn't ask for but that's basically how it works.


I'm sure everything the family has will likely get left to her younger brother as he's the golden child. She has an older sister but she will likely end up a cat lady.

So the family registry has the family members, the asterisk means that next to her name it will show she is married to me but I'm not officially part of the registry. If I were Japanese she would have come off of her registry and entered mine. The new registry she will have to make will include her and our children with me as a footnote as the husband and father of the children.

Well in the West it isn't taboo...it's just not common. Japan has a long history of younger sons being "adopted" into other families that don't have sons. In some more modern cases it can be done because they don't have a good relationship with their family of origin.
