    Why did Blackbeard attack Drum?

I've rewatched movie 9 recently, and found myself thinking about that.
From what we know about Teach, he seems the kinda guy who does things because he has a plan in mind: killing Satchi, going after Luffy then Ace, becoming shishibukai and going to war against Newgate, whatever it is he's doing in Impel Down; From the looks of it, everything is apparently part of a plan for him to reach his goal. Now, is the attack on Drum part of the plan? What did he want to accomplish by devastating the country? And did he succeed?

I think this is definitely one of the things that Oda has presented way in advance and plans to reveal later on, so I figured it could be fun to speculate on what his objective was, as I definitely don't think it was just some random "pirate attack".

Also, a tought: BB wanted to become shishibukai back then as we all know, yet, Drum is part of the World Governement, and he still attacked it. Not the best move if you wanna get in the WG's good graces and get the title...so there's definitely something going on there.

Drum was a weak country, I doubt the World Government cares. I also feel like Teach did it for the kickz rather than for a reason.

doing something for kickz does not sound like "i have everything planned out" BB.

    My guess...
get cash. Doing some harmless pillaging in country about which nobody cares would not affect his chance of becoming shichibukai. but not having cash to survive would.

I don't think BB's plan hinges on how much money he's running around with, he's relying more on personal strength and luck, similar to Luffy. Do you remember the raft he was chasing Luffy on? I agree with Alex here. Drum isn't of much consequence and BB felt like letting loose with his new DF. One of the main things that separates Luffy and Teach to me is that BB likes to destroy just for fun, which is why Shiryu fits so well with that crew.

yeah. and we saw his nakama carrying loot.

he has to eat.... and he eats a lot. his crew needs to eat too. clothes, weapons and stuff. I believe BB was completely broke after he killed fourth commander. Not knowing when he finds the fruit, acting quick to steal it...

he is not above the money and needs to survive.

@Jacoobus BB does not rely on luck. He is not a drifter like luffy. Everything he does is carefully planned ahead. Something so simple as not having any hard cash would surely hinder his plans.

Blackbeard and Drum was just for the plot of Luffy going there and meeting Chopper and stuff, it added a bit of spice to it that Blackbeard was the one who made Wapol flee, there won't be any significance at a later date.

BB and his crew isn't a rosey ass crew like the SH. There pirates, pillaging is what they do. It's not going to be real important later on, he was just doing normal pirate activities lol. And im guessing obtaining a large quantity of money is one of his goals, or else he wouldn't be after one piece. Which everybody seems to assume is a shit load of treasure.
